Contact Lens FAQ
Quick, straight answers to the questions we get asked most about coloured and costume contact lenses in New Zealand. Can't find yours? Email shop@lensfx.co.nz.
Do I need a prescription for coloured contact lenses in NZ?
No prescription is needed to buy from LENSFX. All our lenses are non-prescription (plano 0.00) cosmetic lenses, so they change how your eyes look but don't correct your vision.
We still strongly recommend an eye check with an optometrist before wearing any contact lenses, especially if it's your first time.
Will coloured contacts show up on dark brown eyes?
Yes, if you choose the right type. Opaque costume lenses (white, black, red and most character designs) cover your natural colour completely, so they show up on any eye colour. Lighter natural tints can look subtle on dark brown eyes.
For a natural change on dark eyes, Lilia Grey is designed to lighten dark brown eyes to a soft grey. See our guide to the best coloured contacts for dark brown eyes.
Are contact lenses reusable?
It depends on the lens. One Day lenses are single use: wear them once, then throw them away. Our 3-month and 12-month lenses are reusable for that period from opening, as long as you clean them and store them in fresh solution in a lens case every time.
Never reuse old solution or rinse lenses with tap water.
Where can I find the cheapest coloured contact lenses in NZ?
Our One Day lenses are the most affordable way to try coloured contacts, from $22.50 a pair. Until 31 October they're 3 for 2. Our clearance lenses start from $19.50. If you'll wear a look many times, a 12-month lens can work out cheaper per wear.
How long does it take to get contact lenses?
Orders placed before 2pm on a weekday ship the same day with CourierPost. Delivery usually takes 2 working days anywhere in New Zealand, plus a day or two for rural addresses. Orders after 2pm, or on weekends and public holidays, ship the next working day.
Are coloured contacts cheaper than glasses?
They're a different product. Our lenses are cosmetic only: they change your eye colour but don't correct vision. If you need vision correction, talk to an optometrist about prescription glasses or contacts. If you just want a new eye colour for a costume or everyday look, our lenses start from $22.50 a pair.
How long can I wear coloured contacts in a day?
Start with a few hours the first time and build up as your eyes get used to them. Take them out straight away if your eyes feel dry, itchy, red or uncomfortable, and never sleep in them. If you're unsure, ask your optometrist what's right for your eyes.
What's the difference between 14mm, 15mm, 17mm and 22mm lenses?
The number is the lens diameter. 14mm is a standard lens that covers your iris. 15mm "big eye" lenses make the iris look slightly larger. 17mm mini sclera lenses cover part of the white of the eye, and 22mm sclera lenses cover the whole visible eye for a full special effects look. Larger lenses are more dramatic but take more practice to put in.
How do I look after my lenses?
Wash and dry your hands, then store reusable lenses in a clean lens case with fresh contact lens solution every time you take them out. Our Contact Lens Care Pack ($5) includes a case and solution. Read our full Wear, Care and Safety guide.
Is there a minimum age to buy contact lenses?
Yes. You must be over 12 years old to buy lenses from LENSFX. Younger teens should only wear lenses with a parent or guardian's supervision.
Can I return contact lenses?
Unopened lenses in their original sealed packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. For hygiene reasons we can't accept opened or worn lenses, and sale items can't be returned. To start a return, email myrthe@lensfx.co.nz. If your order arrives damaged or wrong, contact us straight away and we'll make it right.
Can I see the lenses in person?
Yes. LENSFX is the sister brand of BODYFX, and you can visit us at 10 Collins Street, Morningside, Auckland. Our team can help you choose a lens and give advice on putting them in.
